What Causes Poor Posture?

Poor posture can arise from a number of causes. Including:

  • An injury causing pain, resulting in muscle guarding behaviour to avoid the pain
  • Joint problems, either hypermobility or hypomobility
  • The body might be out of balance, with muscle tone and strength in one area of the body being weaker than in another
  • Problems with proprioception (the ability to perceive the position of the body)
  • A psychological problem, such as low self-esteem
  • Aging and degenerative processes within the body

The Problems of Incorrect Posture

The ideal posture is when the structures of the body, muscular and skeletal, are working in balance, resulting in minimum stress on the joints and other structures. Conversely, poor or incorrect posture increases these stresses, ultimately leading to pain and discomfort.

Incorrect posture can be either, structural or positional. Structural causes of poor posture are anatomical defects, these can be permanent and some may not be suitable for Chiropractic care.  Even in this case it may be possible to help the body cope better with these problems through specific corrections.
